Process work for painting

I'm working on a commission for this family that wants a painting of Little Italy in San Diego and I'm working it out.Its a specific location they frequent so I'm trying to get it all in there.

The article was based on the life of an alcoholic who made the choice to turn his life around, and in the process he was able to impact the lives of so many who desperately needed that hope.

I learned with this illustration job that the values needed to be more distinct because when printed everything came out one value.
